Thiruvananthapuram,26 April (H.S.): Kerala is set to experience unusually high temperatures on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heat levels 3–4°C above normal across several districts.

According to the IMD, maximum temperatures are likely to touch around 40°C in Palakkad, 39°C in Kollam, and 38°C in Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kasaragod. Kottayam, Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kannur may record up to 37°C, while Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram could see temperatures of around 36°C.

Weather officials said temperatures in many areas are expected to cross the 98th percentile of climatological values, indicating unusually intense heat conditions. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail across most parts of the State, except in hilly regions, raising concerns over public health.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also issued warnings about heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps and heat rash, particularly during peak hours between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and those engaged in outdoor labour are at higher risk.

In Idukki district, authorities have sounded a high alert after a UV index of 8 was recorded in Munnar. The District Collector has directed that plantation workers avoid work during peak heat hours, with strict monitoring to ensure compliance. Tourists and residents have also been advised to exercise caution.

Meanwhile, the KSDMA has forecast the possibility of isolated thunderstorms, with light rainfall and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph in parts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki.

Authorities have urged people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, wear light cotton clothing, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours as Kerala continues to grapple with rising temperatures.
