Hooghy, 26 April (H.S.): Political tension escalated in Jangipara of Hooghly district ahead of the Assembly elections after BJP candidate Prosenjit Bag alleged that he was harassed and his vehicle was surrounded on Saturday night.
As per information, the incident took place near Borohol More, where TMC supporters allegedly stopped Bag’s car and raised “Jai Bangla” slogans. The BJP candidate claimed that a crowd gathered around his vehicle and attempted to force him out. He further alleged that no police personnel were present at the spot initially and that he was later escorted to safety by the police and central forces.
Bag accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating such incidents out of fear of defeat and questioned the role of the police, demanding impartial action in the matter.
However, local TMC leaders rejected the allegations, stating that their supporters were taking out a peaceful rally in the area when the BJP candidate’s vehicle came in the way. They denied any wrongdoing and alleged that the BJP was trying to create unnecessary tension.
Videos of the incident have surfaced, showing sloganeering and a heated exchange. The episode has further intensified the political atmosphere in the constituency ahead of polling.
Notably, Jangipara is scheduled to go to polls on April 29 in the second phase, with authorities keeping a close watch on the law and order situation.
