New Delhi, 24 April (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the boiler tube explosion at a thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district. The Commission issued notices on Friday to the state's Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.

It may be recalled that on April 14, the boiler tube explosion resulted in the deaths of about 13 workers, with 20 others sustaining injuries. Earlier, extremely hot steam released from the explosion had engulfed the workers.

Subsequently, after shutting down and cooling the boiler, the police initiated rescue operations. The injured workers were admitted to various hospitals.

The Commission has directed that the report include the status of compensation disbursement to the workers and the health condition of the injured.
