
New Delhi, 24 April (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the explosion at a private firecracker factory in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district and issued notices to the state's Chief Secretary and the district's Superintendent of Police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission announced on Friday that according to media reports published on April 20, the blast occurred on April 19 due to friction during chemical mixing and the manufacturing process at the factory. Over 100 workers, including women, were present in the facility at the time of the incident. The injured workers were transferred to Virudhunagar Government Medical College and Hospital.
The NHRC has directed that the report include the health status of the injured individuals, details of the investigation, and information on compensation provided to the families of the deceased and injured.
Notably, 23 workers lost their lives in the Virudhunagar explosion. The district had witnessed a similar recent incident that claimed four lives.
