Kolkata, 23 April (H.S.): The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 witnessed largely peaceful polling across the state, but was marked by sporadic incidents of violence and clashes in several districts.
According to reports, voting began smoothly in 152 constituencies spread across 16 districts, with voters turning out in significant numbers since early morning. However, isolated incidents of unrest, scuffles, and political clashes were reported from multiple locations, creating tension in certain pockets.
Murshidabad emerged as one of the key hotspots, where clashes between rival political supporters led to injuries and heightened security concerns. Authorities responded by deploying additional police and central forces to control the situation and prevent escalation.
There were also allegations of voter intimidation, disruption at polling booths, and confrontations involving candidates in some constituencies. These incidents prompted the Election Commission to seek detailed reports from affected areas and closely monitor developments.
Despite these disruptions, officials maintained that the overall polling process remained largely under control, with security forces ensuring that voting continued in most areas without major interruptions.
The first phase is crucial, covering a significant number of seats in the 294-member Assembly, and its outcome will play an important role in shaping the overall electoral battle in the state.
