Kolkata, 23 April (H.S.): A fresh political debate has emerged in West Bengal after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a plan to introduce metro services in Habra and Ashoknagar during an election rally.

Speaking at a public meeting in Banipur, Habra, Shah said that steps would be taken to bring metro connectivity to both towns, aiming to improve transport infrastructure and ease persistent traffic congestion. He made the announcement while campaigning in support of BJP candidates in the region.

Habra and Ashoknagar, located in North 24 Parganas, are important commercial centres that witness heavy daily footfall. Residents say traffic congestion, especially in Habra with its busy rice and textile markets, has been a long-standing issue affecting commuters and traders alike.

While some locals welcomed the proposal as a potential solution, others expressed skepticism, questioning whether the promise would materialize. Critics pointed out that earlier proposed metro expansions to nearby areas like Barasat and Barrackpore are yet to make significant progress.

India’s first metro system, the Kolkata Metro, began in Kolkata, but further expansion has often faced delays due to land acquisition and logistical challenges.

The announcement has added a new dimension to the ongoing election campaign, with discussions continuing over whether the metro project will become a reality or remain a poll-time promise.
