Mirzapur, April 23

(HS): Eleven persons, including children, were killed in a multi-vehicle crash

caused by a suspected brake failure in a truck in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur

district, authorities said Thursday. According to SP Aparna Rajat Kaushik, the

accident was reported at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, and police and fire brigade

crews went to the scene to conduct a rescue effort with the assistance of

residents.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his

condolences on the deaths in what he described as an exceedingly unfortunate

and heartbreaking tragedy. In a post on X, he stated, “The loss of lives in the

road accident in Mirzapur district is extremely tragic and heart-rending. My

condolences are with the bereaved families. Instructions have been issued to

the concerned officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. I pray to

Lord Shri Ram that the departed souls attain eternal peace, the grief-stricken

families are granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow, and the injured

recover swiftly.” In another post he informed, “Instructions have been issued

to provide financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those who

lost their lives in this accident.”

According to police, the crash occurred on a

stretch of National Highway-135 descending from Dramandganj valley to Lasoda,

some 50 kilometers from district headquarters. According to preliminary

investigations, a vehicle traveling downhill may have failed to brake before

colliding with another truck ahead of it.

When two trucks

collided, an automobile was crushed. Another automobile caught fire after being

damaged in the ensuing chain accident, according to Kaushik. Police and

residents rescued individuals trapped in wrecked automobiles. SP has recorded

11 deaths thus far.

District Magistrate Pawan Gangwar stated that seven of those slain were from

Mirzapur, three from Madhya Pradesh, and one from Sonbhadra. Shiva Singh (8),

Sonam Singh (9), Piyush Singh (14), Pankaj Singh (40), Vandana Singh (43),

Vishnu Singh (45), and Veena Singh (47) were among those who died at Mirzapur's

Jigna. Kartikeya Singh (18) and Priyanka Singh (42) of Satna, Madhya Pradesh,

Vikas Sharma (32) of Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jai Prakash (27) of Sonbhadra

were also killed in the accident, according to authorities.

The cars involved

in the accident included a truck with a Bihar plate number and another from

Madhya Pradesh. One of the automobiles was from the Sonbhadra district, the

other from Mirzapur. According to officials, a thorough investigation is

underway to determine the actual reason of the tragedy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths in a multi-vehicle crash in

Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur on Thursday and offered ex-gratia payments of Rs 2

lakh to each of the victims' next of kin and Rs 50,000 to those injured. “We

are very saddened by the deaths caused by an accident in Mirzapur, Uttar

Pradesh. My sincere sympathies to the grieving families. Praying for the quick

recovery of the injured, Modi wrote on X.

The prime minister also declared that the Prime Minister's National

Relief Fund will provide ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each

person killed in the tragedy, as well as Rs 50,000 to those injured.

Murmu condoled the deaths caused by a multi-vehicle accident in Uttar Pradesh's

Mirzapur district on Thursday and prayed for the injured to recover quickly. I

am terribly grieved to read of the deaths in a traffic accident in Uttar

Pradesh's Mirzapur area. I send my heartfelt sympathies to the families who

have lost loved ones in this catastrophe. Murmu wrote on X, I pray for

the speedy recovery of those injured.
