New Delhi, 23 April (H.S.): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress candidates filed their nominations on Thursday for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Thursday was the last day for submission of nomination papers, and the elections will be held during the ordinary meeting of the Delhi Municipal Corporation scheduled for Wednesday, April 29.

From the BJP, Councillor Praveen Vahi of Ward No. 53, Rohini–E, filed his nomination for the Mayor’s post, while Councillor Monica Pant of Ward No. 206, Anand Vihar, filed her nomination for the position of Deputy Mayor. For the Congress, Councillor Jariya from Ward No. 234 filed his nomination for Mayor, and Councillor Rajesh Kumar Gupta from Ward No. 39 filed for Deputy Mayor. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has not fielded any candidates for the mayor or deputy mayor posts.

On the BJP side, Councillor Jay Bhagwan Yadav from Ward No. 27, Begumpur, and Standing Committee Chairman Manish Chadha from Ward No. 82 filed nominations for the vacant seats in the Standing Committee of the MCD. From AAP, Councillor Jalaj Kumar of Ward No. 55 has filed his nomination for the Standing Committee vacancy. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh and Standing Committee Chairperson Sathya Sharma were present when the BJP candidates submitted their nomination papers, underscoring the party’s coordinated effort to reclaim control of the city’s civic body.

Praveen Vahi, the BJP’s mayoral candidate, said that clearing Delhi of garbage “mountains” will be his top priority, adding that the party will work to make the city’s roads pothole‑free and parks lush green and well‑maintained. He also stated that the BJP will collaborate with the Delhi government to make the capital clean, hygienic, and aesthetically pleasing.

Monica Pant, the BJP’s deputy mayoral candidate, said that the party’s Nari Shakti Vandana (honouring women’s power) initiative is not merely a slogan but a firm commitment to secure women’s rightful space in governance, under which she has been chosen as the nominee for Deputy Mayor.
