Nalbari (Assam), 20 April (HS): Amid the festive spirit of Bohag Bihu, a tragic incident claimed three lives in Assam’s Nalbari district after they drowned in the Pagladiya river on Sunday evening. The incident took place at Katabari village under Ghograpar police station in Nij Borshiral area.

According to police, the victims — two women and a man — had gone to the river for bathing when they accidentally slipped into a deep pit and drowned. Locals rushed to the spot and pulled them out of the water in an unconscious condition before taking them to a hospital, where doctors declared all three dead.

The deceased have been identified as Guddu Deka (35), a resident of Nij Borshiral village, Pinky Das (24) from Panjabari in Guwahati and Rohit Gutung (27). Pinky Das and Rohit Gutung had reportedly come to Guddu Deka’s residence to celebrate Bihu.

Local residents have alleged that a deep pit had formed in the river due to ongoing excavation work for embankment construction, which led to the drowning. They have demanded strict action against the agency involved in the work.

Police have sent the bodies to Nalbari Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination and registered a case. Further investigation into the incident is underway.------------
