Heavy rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 02 April (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across Kerala until Sunday, warning residents to remain cautious amid changing weather conditions.

According to the latest advisory, strong winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph are likely to prevail from Friday onwards in several parts of the state. Authorities have cautioned that lightning poses a serious hazard, with the potential to cause loss of life and damage to property, including electrical and communication networks as well as household appliances connected to power sources.

The IMD has urged the public to take necessary safety precautions, especially during thunderstorm activity, and to avoid open areas or contact with electrical equipment during lightning strikes.

Alongside the rain alert, the state is also expected to experience a significant rise in daytime temperatures. Palakkad district is likely to record the highest temperature, touching up to 39°C. Kollam, Kottayam, and Thrissur districts may see temperatures reaching 38°C, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Kannur could record highs of around 37°C.

In Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod districts, the mercury is expected to rise to nearly 36°C. Officials noted that temperatures across Kerala could be 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal levels.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to result in hot and uncomfortable weather conditions, particularly in lowland areas, while hilly regions may experience relatively milder conditions.

The IMD has reiterated its call for public vigilance, advising people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and remain alert to sudden weather changes over the coming days.
