Kolkata, 02 April (H.S.): Several police personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Suri police station, were injured after a police team came under attack from a mob in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, prompting arrests and heavy deployment of security forces to restore order.
The incident occurred in Kukhudihi village, where OC Shailendra Upadhyay was among those injured when miscreants allegedly hurled stones and bricks at the police team.
According to police sources, tension began after an earthmover engaged in construction work near a graveyard accidentally dug into soil covering a grave. The incident led to anger among a section of local residents, who reportedly detained the earthmover operator.
The situation escalated when a confrontation broke out between two groups belonging to the same community. Police personnel who reached the spot initially tried to defuse the situation and secure the release of the driver. However, the situation turned violent when the crowd allegedly started pelting stones and bricks, leaving several officers injured.
Senior officials, including Birbhum Superintendent of Police Surya Pratap Yadav, rushed to the spot with additional forces to bring the situation under control.
“Fourteen persons have been arrested so far. Raids are ongoing and all those involved in the incident will be apprehended,” Yadav said.
He also confirmed that both groups involved in the clash belonged to the same community.
Police said the situation is currently under control, though security forces continue to remain deployed in the area as a precautionary measure. An investigation into the incident is underway.
