Kochi, 02 April (H.S.):The investigation into the sexual assault case against Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith has intensified, with police identifying the caravan where the alleged incident is said to have taken place. According to officials, the vehicle—central to the complaint filed by a young actress—did not have any CCTV cameras installed inside. However, efforts are underway to collect footage from external surveillance cameras near the caravan to establish crucial evidence.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred in January this year on a film set in Fort Kochi. In her complaint, the survivor stated that the assault took place inside the caravan during the shoot. Police sources said they are now focusing on gathering maximum evidence ahead of the filmmaker’s bail hearing scheduled for Saturday.
Investigators are also planning to record statements from several film crew members who were present on the set at the time of the alleged incident. Their testimonies are expected to play a key role in corroborating the sequence of events and strengthening the case.
Currently lodged in sub-jail custody, Ranjith’s plea for bail, along with the police’s custody application, will be considered by the court on the same day. Authorities are aiming to present substantial findings during the hearing to support further custodial interrogation if required.
The complaint was filed only last week, with the survivor reportedly approaching the City Police Commissioner after experiencing severe emotional distress following the incident. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Aswathy Jiji, was constituted to conduct a discreet preliminary probe. Based on initial findings, the police proceeded with the arrest of the filmmaker.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film industry, with further developments expected as the investigation progresses.
