Jorhat (Assam), 02 April (HS): Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a sharp political attack on the BJP, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an election rally in Titabar in Jorhat district ahead of the Assam Assembly Elections 2026.

Addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi said that if the Congress comes to power, lands allegedly taken away from people would be returned. He added that the Chief Minister would have to apologise and even if an apology is made, strict action would still be taken against him for alleged corruption. Gandhi asserted that the consequences of corruption by the Chief Minister and his family would eventually come to light.

Highlighting Assam’s cultural legacy, Gandhi referred to revered figures like Srimanta Sankardev, Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg, stating that they stood for unity and non-violence. He alleged that the present leadership in Assam was far removed from these ideals and accused the Chief Minister of promoting fear, violence and corruption.

The Congress leader also questioned the BJP’s promise of ₹350 daily wages for tea garden workers in the previous elections, asking whether the commitment had been fulfilled. He alleged that large tracts of land had been handed over to corporate groups, claiming that Assam was being run by powerful syndicates.

Turning his criticism towards the Prime Minister, Gandhi alleged that India’s economic and foreign policies were being influenced by external powers, warning of adverse impacts on domestic businesses. He further claimed that key national decisions were being shaped under international pressure.

Speaking about the upcoming elections, Rahul Gandhi outlined the Congress party’s five guarantees, including monthly financial assistance to women, ₹50,000 support for self-reliance, land rights, ₹1,250 monthly pension for senior citizens, and health insurance coverage of up to ₹25 lakh per family. He urged people to uphold the ideals associated with leaders like Tarun Gogoi and cultural icons of the state.--------------
