New Delhi, 18 April (H.S.):

The defeat of the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament has ignited a firestorm of political rhetoric, with Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accusing the central government of a nefarious scheme to tether women's quotas to delimitation, a maneuver deftly foiled by opposition unity.

Addressing a packed press conference at the Congress headquarters on Saturday, Gandhi hailed the outcome as a monumental victory for democracy. She charged that the government had dithered for three years on substantive action, only to rush a notification in a bid to manipulate boundaries and evade a caste census.

Friday marked a great triumph for democracy, she declared. The central government sought to undermine our democratic institutions and federal structure, but the united opposition thwarted it. This is a victory for the Constitution and the nation.

Gandhi alleged the regime aimed to ram through the bill under the guise of women's empowerment, securing unchecked power over delimitation while dodging accountability on caste demographics. Had it passed, they would tout it as their achievement; if rejected, they would brand us anti-women, she incisively remarked.

Her salvo extended to the Bharatiya Janata Party's track record on women's safety, citing glaring lapses in cases from Unnao and Hathras, assaults on female athletes, and the Manipur violence. This same government, indifferent to these crises, now postures as women's champion—a transparent charade.

Clarifying the stakes, Gandhi emphasized that the battle transcended mere quotas: it pitted transparency against opaque power grabs intertwined with political realignments. The opposition could not endorse a proposal granting the government carte blanche without accountability, she asserted.

In a rallying note, she underscored the potency of opposition solidarity: The nation has witnessed that a united front can challenge Narendra Modi's government. That's why they dub this a 'Black Day,' while we celebrate it as democracy's resurgence.

Concluding with a nod to empowered women voters, Gandhi quipped, India's women are awake to the government's PR blitz and media spin—they see through it all.
