Guwahati, 18 April (HS): Nangal Bihu was observed across Assam on Saturday on the fifth day of Rongali Bihu, which coincides with the fourth day of the Bohag month. The day, regarded as the fifth among the traditional ‘Saat Bihu’, is dedicated to agricultural practices and is celebrated by the farming community with deep cultural reverence.

Marking the occasion, agrarian households cleaned and worshipped farming tools such as ploughs, yokes and other implements by lighting earthen lamps and incense sticks. The ritual reflects the community’s commitment to preserving age-old traditions and seeking prosperity for the upcoming agricultural season.

Nangal (A Cultivater) Bihu holds special significance in the lives of Assamese farmers, symbolizing preparation for cultivation after the festive spirit of Bohag Bihu. Across the state, particularly in rural areas, farmers were seen observing the customs with enthusiasm, offering prayers for a bountiful harvest and overall well-being.

However, changing times and the influence of modern society have also impacted traditional practices. With the increasing use of advanced agricultural machinery such as tractors, the dependence on conventional tools has reduced. As a result, the prominence of Nangal Bihu has seen a gradual decline in recent years, though it continues to be observed in several parts of the state, keeping the cultural legacy alive.-----------
