Guwahati, 18 April 18 (HS): The Indian Army’s Red Horns Division under Gajraj Corps conducted a joint flood relief exercise, ‘Exercise Jal Rahat’, at IIT Guwahati on Saturday, showcasing coordinated disaster response and preparedness among multiple agencies.

The large-scale exercise brought together flood relief columns of the Army along with the NDRF, SDRF and SSB, highlighting inter-agency coordination in tackling flood emergencies. It demonstrated various operational aspects, including rescue procedures, deployment strategies and the use of advanced technology during flood situations.

Designed to enhance response capabilities during severe flooding, the exercise simulated real-life scenarios such as rescue missions, drone-based surveillance, logistical support to stranded villagers and evacuation of drowning individuals. Specialist teams from the participating agencies also carried out deep-water rescue drills, reflecting their operational efficiency in challenging conditions.

Senior officials from the Army, state administration, SSB, CAPFs and disaster management organisations attended the event, which was witnessed by around 800 people, including NCC and NSS cadets as well as students from various educational institutions.

The operational readiness of flood relief units was reviewed by Lt Gen Neeraj Shukla, General Officer Commanding of Gajraj Corps. Addressing the gathering, he emphasised a “whole-of-society” approach to disaster management, urging all stakeholders to follow the guiding principles of “Predict, Prepare, Protect and Provide” to strengthen coordination and resilience.

The exercise reinforced confidence among the public regarding the preparedness of the Army and associated agencies in handling natural calamities. Participating organisations also committed to conducting regular joint training, updating standard operating procedures and enhancing capacity-building measures to ensure an effective emergency response system.-----------
