Kolkata, 18 April (H.S.) : In another disturbing incident at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, a third-year student was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside the campus on Saturday, raising fresh concerns over student safety and mental health.
The deceased has been identified as Jaybir Singh Daria (21), a student of the Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering Department and a resident of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
According to police and institute sources, the student’s blood-stained body was found lying in front of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall on the campus on Saturday morning. Security personnel were the first to spot him and immediately informed the IIT administration.
Police later reached the spot and shifted the student to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The Hijli Police, which is investigating the case, has sent the body for postmortem examination. Preliminary findings suggest that the student either fell or jumped from an upper floor of the hostel building or from the rooftop. However, the exact cause of death is yet to be established.
Police have also taken possession of CCTV footage from the campus and are trying to determine whether the student was alone at the time of the incident or if anyone else was present.
Notably, this is reported to be the eighth unnatural death on the IIT Kharagpur campus in the last nearly 16 months. Most of these incidents occurred within the institute premises, once again triggering questions over campus safety and student well-being.
Police said a clearer picture would emerge only after the postmortem report is received. Further investigation is underway.
