Thiruvananthapuram, 17 April (H.S.):Kerala is reeling under an intense spell of heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing high-temperature warnings across 12 districts, excluding Wayanad and Idukki. The scorching conditions are expected to persist at least until Sunday, raising concerns over public health and daily life disruptions.
According to the IMD, Palakkad district is likely to bear the brunt of the heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar up to 40°C. Kollam may witness temperatures touching 39°C, while Kottayam could see highs of around 38°C.
In several other districts — including Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod — maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 37°C. Officials noted that these figures are approximately 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal for this time of the year, intensifying the discomfort experienced by residents.
A yellow alert has been issued in all districts except Wayanad and Idukki, signalling potentially hazardous weather conditions. The combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to create oppressive weather across the plains, with heat and discomfort levels remaining significantly high, particularly outside hilly regions.
The IMD has cautioned that such conditions could lead to heat-related illnesses, urging people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Meanwhile, there is a possibility of isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in parts of the state. Districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod may experience light to moderate rain, along with gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph.
Weather experts indicate that while these sporadic showers may offer temporary relief, they are unlikely to significantly reduce the prevailing heat conditions across the state.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, advising residents to remain vigilant and follow official updates as Kerala navigates one of the season’s most intense heat spells.
