Punjab, 16 April (H.S.): In a major push to enhance operations against criminals and gangsters, the Punjab Government has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar.
To strengthen the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in identifying and preventing crime, the Punjab Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a ‘structured data system’.
As part of the initiative, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to develop a structured data system that will support ongoing campaigns such as ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ and ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’. The system is designed to provide detailed information on criminals and gangsters with just a single click, significantly improving operational efficiency.
Under this partnership, IIT Ropar will develop advanced software equipped with features like data analytics, voice recognition, and dashboard-based monitoring. These tools will enable real-time tracking and intelligence-led policing, allowing authorities to respond swiftly to criminal activities.
A key aspect of the project is the integration of both structured and unstructured data into a unified system. Police records, including scanned documents and handwritten reports, will be digitised and consolidated into a comprehensive database. This will help overcome existing challenges in analysing fragmented data and speed up investigations.
The Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit (DITSU), based at AIMS Mohali, will coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the project, particularly in tackling substance abuse under the ‘Yudh Nashiyan Virudh’ campaign.
Officials stated that the initiative will strengthen AI and machine learning capabilities within the police force, enabling better crime pattern recognition and predictive analysis. The project is expected to significantly improve crime detection, enhance monitoring of criminal networks, and enable faster, data-driven decision-making, ultimately ensuring greater public safety across Punjab.
