Agartala, 14 April (HS): In a move aimed at reducing the financial strain on consumers during the festive season, the Tripura government has rolled out subsidised fish sales across the state ahead of the Bengali New Year (Poila Boishakh), bringing significant relief to the public amid rising prices.
Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das said that the Fisheries Department has set up multiple sale centres to ensure adequate supply of fish while keeping prices under control. The initiative is expected to directly benefit consumers by curbing price spikes typically witnessed during festivals.
He further stated that fish are being sourced from departmental farms and cooperative societies, which is not only ensuring steady availability but also supporting local fishermen and producers. Popular varieties such as rohu, catla, common carp, mrigal and silver carp are being made available to meet consumer demand.
Additionally, hilsa—considered a delicacy during Bengali festivities—is being sold at subsidised rates through the Tripura Apex Fisheries Cooperative Society Limited at Maharajganj market in Agartala, making it more accessible to middle- and lower-income groups.
The minister emphasised that the initiative is designed to stabilise market prices, prevent profiteering, and ease the economic burden on citizens so they can celebrate the festival without financial stress.
The subsidised fish sales commenced across various centres in the state from April 15, offering relief to consumers while also strengthening the local fisheries sector.----------
