New Delhi, 14 April (H.S.):
Ahead of the parliamentary discussion on women’s reservation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wrote a detailed letter to the nation’s women, seeking their support for the proposed constitutional amendment. He shared the letter on social media and said that mothers, sisters and daughters across the country have welcomed the decision to ensure women’s reservation from the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Paying tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, the Prime Minister said that the discussion on the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam” would begin in Parliament from April 16, in keeping with the Constitution’s values of equality and inclusion. He appealed to the people, especially women, to bless and support the amendment in the coming session so that the House may pass this historic measure.
In his letter, PM Modi said Indian women are making remarkable contributions in science, innovation, sport, education, art and entrepreneurship, and that their growing presence must be matched by greater participation in policymaking.
He also noted that while women gained the right to vote at the time of Independence, many other countries took much longer, yet adequate representation in legislative bodies has still not been fully achieved.
The Prime Minister argued that for the goal of a developed India by 2047, the country’s half population must play an active role in decision-making. He said that if the 2029 elections are held with women’s reservation in place, democracy will become stronger, and any delay in this direction would be unfortunate and unfair to women.
He urged women to write to their respective MPs and encourage support for the bill, calling it a historic step toward ensuring women’s participation in legislative institutions.
