New Delhi, 13 April (H.S.):

The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Central Government on a petition demanding statutory Minimum Support Price (MSP) to ensure farmers receive fair remuneration, filed by journalist and activist Prakash Gopalrao Pohre.

During hearing on Monday, the court initially observed that the petition's demands equate to rewriting the nation's economic policy framework. Nevertheless, it proceeded to direct the government to file its response.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioner, underscored that prevailing MSP rates fall woefully short of covering production costs, plunging agriculture into distress with over 10,000 farmer suicides annually. This intervention spotlights the imperative for legal safeguards to bolster agrarian sustainability.
