Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid profound homage to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on its anniversary, extolling their immolation as an emblem of the nation's indomitable fortitude.
In a multilingual tribute on X, he averred that the valiant souls' courage and self-abnegation shall perpetually inspire posterity toward liberty, equity, and dignity, while their defiance against colonial savagery galvanizes every generation.
PM Modi disseminated a Sanskrit subhashita: Indraṃ vardhanto apturaḥ kṛṇvanto viśvamāryam, apaghananto arāvaṇaḥ. Its purport exhorts the industrious: Augment ye benevolent forces that elevate the cosmos to nobility and refinement; extirpate malevolent, ruinous powers sowing discord, iniquity, and anarchy in society.
Noteworthy is that on April 13, 1919—Baisakhi day—multitudes convened peacefully at Amritsar's Jallianwala Bagh. British Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, sans warning, commanded troops to unleash indiscriminate gunfire upon the unarmed throng. The constricted egress trapped escapees; many plunged into the well seeking refuge. Hundreds perished, thousands wounded in this sanguinary atrocity.
