New Delhi, 12 April (H.S.):
In a meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) has greenlit the construction of two new hostel buildings at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) campus—one each for boys and girls. The project's total estimated cost stands at ₹573.41 crore, with completion anticipated in approximately 36 months.
On Sunday, the Chief Minister, sharing the committee's decision, highlighted the sustained surge in student enrollment at MAMC over recent years. Admissions have risen from 150 annually to 250, straining hostel infrastructure. Consequently, room shortages force many students into shared accommodations, while others remain deprived of hostel facilities altogether. The college's existing hostels, constructed between 1965 and 1982, have aged considerably, underscoring the long-felt need for modern replacements.
The Chief Minister affirmed that the new hostel blocks will be developed within the existing campus to address these demands. Under the plan, a girls' hostel on Site-A will be built at ₹269.19 crore, while the boys' hostel on Site-B carries a budget of ₹304.22 crore. Both structures will encompass basement and superstructure elements, complete with civil and electrical works.
She added that land is readily available, and construction will commence within six months of securing administrative and expenditure approvals. The timeline allocates six months for planning and 30 months for execution.
