Kochi, 10 April (H.S.):
Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan on Thursday exuded strong confidence that the United Democratic Front (UDF) is poised for a decisive victory in the ongoing Kerala Assembly elections, predicting a clean sweep in four key districts.
Speaking to reporters, Satheesan said the UDF could win all seats in Ernakulam, Malappuram, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta districts, which together account for 40 Assembly seats. “It will not be a surprise if the UDF secures all seats in these districts. Overall, we are confident of crossing the 100-seat mark,” he said.
He asserted that this projection is based on a solid political foundation rather than mere speculation. Recalling past electoral performances, Satheesan noted that the UDF had secured 100 seats in the 2001 Assembly elections. While the alliance had lost support from several sections after 2005, he claimed that nearly 95% of those groups have now been brought back through sustained and silent political efforts.
Highlighting recent successes, Satheesan pointed out that the UDF’s strong performance in by-elections, Parliament elections, and local body polls reflects the alliance’s growing momentum. He attributed this to what he described as a “systematic and professional approach” adopted by the front.
He also referred to the UDF’s significant gains in the last Lok Sabha elections, despite the likelihood of Prime Minister Narendra Modi returning to power at the Centre, stating that it underscores the alliance’s political strength in Kerala.
Responding to questions on his earlier remarks about “political exile,” Satheesan said his statements remain on record and can be verified. He added that repeated media questioning on the issue appeared aimed at generating sensational headlines rather than substantive discussion.
The Opposition leader maintained that the UDF is on track to translate its electoral momentum into a strong mandate in the Assembly polls.
