Bhubaneswar, 10 April (H.S.): Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi has appealed to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to revisit the State Cabinet’s decision to suspend the proposed Metro Rail project in the capital, calling it a matter of significant public interest.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Sarangi highlighted the rapid urbanization and rising population in Bhubaneswar, which have led to increasing traffic congestion and strain on existing public transport systems. She emphasized the need for a modern, high-capacity, and cost-efficient mobility solution.
The MP stated that the Metro project would not only benefit Bhubaneswar but also improve connectivity with nearby regions such as Cuttack, Jatni, and Khurda. She noted that the project would provide accessible and reliable transport for diverse groups, including students, professionals, senior citizens, and differently-abled persons.
Recalling her earlier efforts, Sarangi mentioned that she had previously written to former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in 2022 advocating for the Metro and had reviewed the progress of Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project Ltd. in 2024.
She argued that shelving the project may not be based on a comprehensive assessment of future urban needs, especially as Bhubaneswar and Cuttack continue to expand into a unified urban region. She also stressed that a modern transport system is essential for boosting tourism, attracting investment, and enhancing the city’s image.
On the financial aspect, Sarangi pointed out that approximately ₹274 crore has already been spent, warning that delaying the project could significantly escalate costs in the future. She noted that metro systems across India are implemented for long-term public benefit rather than immediate profitability.
Calling the Metro a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and sustainable urban development, the MP urged the state government to reconsider its decision taken on April 4, 2026. She also offered to facilitate coordination with the Centre for approvals and funding support.
