Guwahati, 10 April (HS): The Manipur government has decided to prolong the suspension of mobile internet and data services, including VPN access, across five districts for another two days amid continuing concerns over law and order.
As per an order issued by the Home Department, the restrictions will stay effective in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts from 2:00 PM on April 10, 2026.
Officials stated that the extension follows a fresh assessment of the prevailing situation, with authorities opting for continued preventive measures to ensure public safety. The government expressed apprehension that misinformation and rumours circulating on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X could trigger unrest, including mob mobilisation and incidents of violence or property damage.
The directive has been enforced under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, after obtaining approval from the Governor. Authorities highlighted that monitoring mobile data traffic effectively remains a technical challenge, making the continuation of restrictions necessary.
Earlier, mobile internet services were suspended for three days starting April 7. While broadband services such as Internet Leased Line (ILL) and Fiber to the Home (FTTH) were partially restored on April 8 under certain conditions, mobile data services have remained restricted.
The order, issued on an ex-parte basis due to urgency, will be communicated to the public through various media platforms. The government has cautioned that any breach of the restrictions will attract legal consequences under applicable laws.----------
