Kolkata, 01 April (H.S.): Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, on Wednesday criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its MP Mahua Moitra over her alleged remarks, accusing the party of promoting division and hatred among communities.
In a post on social media platform X, Adhikari said that TMC’s politics had reached its “lowest level,” alleging that it was attempting to create strategic divisions between communities. He claimed that Moitra’s remarks not only insulted the Gujarati community but also hurt the “soul of India.”
He further said that questioning the contribution of Gujaratis in India’s freedom struggle was not just an insult to a particular community, but a direct attack on the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Highlighting Patel’s role in nation-building, Adhikari said that without his determination and vision, the integration of 562 princely states would not have been possible, and the formation of a united India would have remained incomplete.
Accusing the TMC of following a “divide and rule” policy, he said that while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) believes in “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” the ruling party in West Bengal was working to pit communities against each other.
He added that during the freedom movement, people from different regions—including Bengalis and Gujaratis—fought shoulder to shoulder against British rule, rising above regional identities as Indians.
Adhikari alleged that the TMC, facing political setbacks, was trying to sow discord among communities. He also said that those who had “turned Bengal into a hub of corruption and syndicate raj” had no right to question anyone’s patriotism.
In his post, he appealed to members of the Gujarati community in Bhabanipur to take note of what he termed as “insulting remarks,” while assuring that Bengalis respect all communities—be it Marwaris, Biharis or Punjabis—and such statements would not alter that sentiment.
