Kolkata, 07 March (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday expressed displeasure over administrative arrangements and protocol issues during her visit to Siliguri in north Bengal to attend the 9th International Santal Conference.

Addressing the gathering at the event, the President indirectly questioned the functioning of the state administration, stating that several obstacles were created in the organisation of the conference, causing difficulties for the organisers. After arriving at Bagdogra Airport earlier in the day, Murmu proceeded to the event venue at Gosainpur before attending the main conference in Bidhannagar.

In her address, the President said that despite adequate space in Bidhannagar, permission for holding the conference there was initially denied citing security concerns. As a result, the organisers had to change the venue four times, which she said was not appropriate for a major cultural and social event.

Referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in an emotional tone, Murmu said she considered Banerjee like a sister and regarded herself as a daughter of Bengal. However, she described it as unfortunate if such administrative hurdles were created for events that promote the culture, identity and traditions of tribal communities.

Murmu also expressed mild dissatisfaction over arrangements at the venue, noting that several members of the Santal community were seen outside the conference hall and appeared to have been prevented from entering. She said such a large international event should ensure open participation of the community.

During her speech, the President also recalled the tradition of bravery in the Santal community, referring to Tilka Manjhi, who led a rebellion against oppression nearly 240 years ago.

She said members of the Santal community do not accept injustice and have a long tradition of resisting oppression. “Santals are a brave community and should take pride in their glorious history,” she said.

The President also raised the issue of protocol, stating that as per convention, the chief minister or a senior cabinet minister of the state is expected to be present at the airport to receive the President. However, neither the chief minister nor any senior minister was present at Bagdogra Airport to welcome her, with only Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb attending.

The President’s remarks have triggered fresh political discussions over the state government’s arrangements and Centre-state relations. A large number of members of the tribal community attended the conference and expressed enthusiasm over the President’s presence at the event.
