New Delhi, 30 March (H.S.):
A BJP delegation met the Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi on Monday to lodge a formal complaint against West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress accusing it of hijacking the electoral process in the state.
In a six-page memorandum the BJP charged that TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee was personally intimidating voters door-to-door while threatening dire consequences for those supporting the BJP.
The team included Union Ministers Piyush Goyal Kiren Rijiju and Sukanta Majumdar along with MPs Arun Singh Anil Baluni and Om Pathak who handed over the petition highlighting TMC's stranglehold on the state's democratic machinery.
Speaking to reporters afterward Rijiju alleged Banerjee's administration was entirely under TMC sway with the entire bureaucratic apparatus bending to party dictates to coerce votes.
He pressed the poll panel to enforce free and fair elections rejecting any repeat of strong-arm tactics and welcomed the commission's assurance of stern action to safeguard poll integrity.
Rijiju added amid ongoing elections the public was openly rebelling against TMC's overreach.
