Kochi, 29 March (H.S.): Christians across Kerala joined millions of believers worldwide in observing Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week — the most sacred period in the Christian liturgical calendar. Special prayers, processions, and religious services were held in churches across the state, drawing large gatherings of the faithful.
Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, an event that precedes his suffering and crucifixion. According to biblical tradition, Jesus was welcomed by crowds who waved palm branches and laid them on the path, hailing him as their saviour. The day is therefore also known locally as “Kuruthola Perunnal,” symbolising the reenactment of this historic moment.
In churches across Kerala, devotees participated in ceremonial processions carrying palm leaves, followed by the blessing of the palms, Holy Mass, and scriptural reflections. The faithful marked the occasion with deep reverence, recalling the humility and sacrifice of Christ as he entered Jerusalem, fully aware of the suffering that awaited him.
The observance of Palm Sunday also signals the commencement of Holy Week, which retraces the final days of Jesus Christ’s life — from his entry into Jerusalem to the Last Supper, crucifixion at Calvary, and ultimately, his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Churches have scheduled a series of special liturgical services throughout the week, reflecting on themes of sacrifice, redemption, and hope.
As part of the Holy Week observances, Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, will be observed on April 2. This will be followed by Good Friday and Easter celebrations later in the week.
The solemn yet spiritually uplifting atmosphere witnessed across Kerala underscores the enduring significance of faith and tradition among the Christian community during this sacred season.
