Guwahati, 22 March (HS): The Election Commission of India has directed all states and Union Territories to ensure comprehensive voter assistance and Assured Minimum Facilities (AMFs) at every polling station for the upcoming General Elections and bye-elections 2026.

According to the Commission, the election schedule for Legislative Assemblies in Assam, along with bye-elections in Nagaland and Tripura, was announced on March 15. In preparation, the Commission has instructed Chief Electoral Officers to ensure that all polling stations are fully equipped with essential facilities on polling day.

The AMFs include provision of clean drinking water, shaded waiting areas, toilets with water supply, adequate lighting, ramps for Persons with Disabilities (PwD), standard voting compartments, and clear signage. Additionally, benches will be arranged at regular intervals in queues to provide comfort to voters.

To enhance voter awareness, four standardised Voter Facilitation Posters will be displayed prominently at each polling station. These will include key details such as polling station information, list of candidates, guidelines for voters, approved identification documents and the voting process.

Further, Voter Assistance Booths (VABs) will be set up at every polling location, staffed by Booth Level Officers and officials to help voters locate their booth and serial number in the electoral roll. These booths will feature prominent signage for easy visibility.

In a voter-friendly initiative, mobile phone deposit facilities will also be arranged outside polling station entrances. Voters will be required to deposit switched-off phones with designated volunteers before entering and can collect them after casting their vote.

The Commission reiterated that the provision of these facilities and accessibility measures is mandatory and will be closely monitored to ensure strict compliance, aiming to deliver a smooth and convenient voting experience for all electors.----------
