Murshidabad, 21 March (H.S.):

Five members of a family were seriously injured in a clash over a land dispute in Kandi area of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Eid, triggering tension in the locality, the police said.

The injured were identified as Touhid Sheikh (70), his sons Amirul Sheikh (50) and Rabiul Sheikh (35), and his grandsons Asif (18) and Banarul Sheikh (25), all residents of Hatpara village under Kandi police station area.

According to police and local sources, the dispute was between Touhid’s nephew Shahjahan Sheikh and one Azim Sheikh over a piece of land. Touhid and his family were allegedly attacked for supporting Shahjahan.

Family members alleged that Azim Sheikh and his wife went to their house on Eid morning and an altercation broke out. During the scuffle, Azim allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at Touhid, leading to a struggle.

As Touhid’s sons and grandsons rushed to his rescue, they were attacked with sharp weapons and the firearm. The family members managed to snatch the weapon during the incident, they claimed.

All the injured were admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital in serious condition.

The police said an investigation is underway.
