Prayagraj 20
March (HS): For nearly a year, a 67-year-old woman from the Jhunsi area had
been suffering from serious problems like heaviness after meals, frequent
belching, vomiting, throat irritation, and food regurgitation. These symptoms
were affecting her daily life, and medications were providing only temporary
relief. After continued discomfort, the patient consulted Swaroop Rani Nehru
Hospital (SRN). A detailed examination, including an endoscopy, revealed a
hiatal hernia. This condition involves the upper part of the stomach slipping
out of its original position and into the chest, causing acid reflux and other
problems. Hiatal
hernia is initially treated with medications and lifestyle changes, but when
these do not provide relief and the patient's daily routine starts getting
affected, then surgery becomes necessary.
Further
complicating the case was the patient's prior medical history. She had
previously undergone a thyroidectomy, a hysterectomy, and surgery for rectal
prolapse, which increased the risk of intra-abdominal adhesions. This made the
operation technically challenging.
Keeping
all these circumstances in mind, the team, led by Dr. Vaibhav Srivastava, Head
of the Department of Surgery, carefully planned and successfully performed a
laparoscopic fundoplication operation on the patient. The team included Dr.
Tarun Kalra, Dr. Nishant Shukla, Dr. Harshit Sharma, Dr. Srishti Sikdar, and
Dr. Saurabh Mishra. Dr. Pallavi Sood and Dr. Utkarsh Majumdar, under the
guidance of Dr. Shivendu Ojha and Dr. Sakshi Singh, assisted from the
anesthesia department. Pramila Rai, Dinesh, Fayaz, and other staff played an
important role in the operation theater.
This is a
modern, minimally invasive surgery that involves realigning the upper stomach
through a small incision to prevent acid reflux. The patient's condition was
satisfactory after the operation, and he was discharged with marked improvement
in vomiting, regurgitation, and throat irritation. Earlier, patients had to go
to Lucknow, Varanasi or Delhi for this type of surgery, but now this facility
is available in Prayagraj itself.
Dr.
Vaibhav Srivastava urged the general public not to ignore problems such as
prolonged chest or throat irritation, sour belching, or frequent regurgitation.
With timely diagnosis and proper treatment, successful treatment Dr. Vaibhav
Srivastava further explained, Even in complex cases of hiatal hernia, if
diagnosed early and treated with proper planning, laparoscopic surgery can
provide a safe and permanent solution. The use of modern techniques results in
less pain, faster recovery, and a better quality of life for the patient.
