Majuli (Assam), 19 March (HS): Ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, the political landscape in the 98 No. Majuli Assembly constituency is witnessing heightened activity, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging in a strong position. Polling in the state is scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, while counting of votes will take place on May 4.
Majuli, recognized as the world’s largest river island, is located in the midst of the mighty Brahmaputra River and holds significant political importance in the state. The constituency, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, is currently represented by BJP MLA Bhuvan Gam. Notably, the seat had earlier been represented by former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, adding to its political prominence.
In the run-up to the elections, the Majuli seat witnessed considerable tussle between alliance partners BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Despite Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing a BJP candidate for the seat, AGP continued to assert its claim and mobilized its cadre with the aim of contesting the constituency.
The contest over Majuli turned the river island seat into a key point of interest within the ruling alliance. AGP had projected Mising community leader Brajen Gam, brother of sitting MLA Bhuvan Gam, as its prospective candidate. However, in a final decision, BJP fielded incumbent MLA Bhuvan Gam from the constituency.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has nominated Indranil Pegu as its candidate from Majuli, setting the stage for a multi-cornered contest.
Majuli remains one of the most significant constituencies among the 126 Assembly seats in Assam, as it has previously produced a Chief Minister. While infrastructure development such as roads, ghats, bridges, and major projects has marked a new phase of growth in the region, voters emphasize the need for stronger focus on basic sectors like healthcare and education.
According to local residents, the constituency requires a representative who can ensure holistic development and remain closely connected with the people to address their concerns effectively. Observers note that unless concrete steps are taken in essential sectors, the overall development of the historic river island may remain incomplete.------------
