New Delhi, 16 March (H.S.): A fiery exchange unfolded in the Rajya Sabha between the ruling coalition and opposition over the escalating liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply disruptions and soaring prices, exacerbated by the West Asia conflict.

Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge highlighted the crisis gripping households, hotels, restaurants, and hostels nationwide, noting India's 60% LPG import reliance—90% via the Strait of Hormuz—has led to cylinder rates exceeding ₹5,000 in several areas amid 25-day urban and 45-day rural wait times, fueling panic bookings and hoarding.

Kharge accused the government of inadequate preparedness despite early advisories on energy risks, challenging Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's Lok Sabha claim of ample stocks and calls to ignore rumors, as ground realities diverge sharply. He demanded urgent measures for affordable access to small traders and citizens.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju interjected, prompting a brief uproar, after which Leader of the House JP Nadda rebuked the opposition—especially Congress—for politicizing a global predicament, citing Puri's detailed briefing and alleging a Congress leader's involvement in black-marketing.

Nadda urged unity in national interest over partisanship.
