New Delhi, 10 March (H.S.): The Rajya Sabha descended into chaos Tuesday as opposition MPs staged a raucous protest and subsequent walkout over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, accusing the process of being a fraud that erodes voter list integrity by deleting legitimate names.
Proceedings kicked off at 11 a.m. with tabling of papers, but Zero Hour erupted when Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demanded an urgent debate, slamming SIR in multiple states as manipulative and detrimental to credible elections. Heated exchanges ensued with treasury benches, culminating in the opposition's dramatic exit from the House.
Leader of the House JP Nadda dismissed the allegations outright, noting extensive prior discussions on electoral reforms last session, and lambasted the opposition for habitually disrupting proceedings rather than engaging substantively.
They prefer anarchy over debate, Nadda charged, decrying the walkout as irresponsible and evasive of meaningful discourse.
