Chennai , 28 Feb (H.S.): A comprehensive security cordon has been thrown around the historic Tirupparankundram Subramanya Swamy Temple as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to offer prayers there on Sunday evening. The visit, which comes amid heightened public and political attention, has prompted authorities to roll out elaborate security arrangements across Madurai and adjoining areas.
Senior police officials said a multi-tier security grid has been established in and around the temple complex to ensure the Prime Minister’s visit proceeds without disruption. Barricades have been erected along key approach roads, and access to the hill temple is being closely regulated. Surveillance has been intensified, with additional personnel deployed at vantage points and entry gates.
As part of the precautionary measures, mobile signal jammers have been installed within the temple vicinity to prevent unauthorised communication. Devotees are being permitted entry only after thorough screening, including baggage checks and identity verification. Special protection units and central security agencies conducted a detailed inspection of the premises to review preparedness and crowd management plans.
Security has been further strengthened in light of sensitivities during previous festivals, including disputes reported during the Karthigai Deepam celebrations over lighting lamps on a nearby hill. Officials said the enhanced arrangements are purely preventive in nature.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Chennai on Saturday night after engagements in Gujarat and Rajasthan. On Sunday, he will travel to Puducherry to lay the foundation stone for projects worth ₹2,700 crore, followed by a visit to Madurai to inaugurate and launch infrastructure works valued at ₹4,400 crore.
In addition to dedicating redeveloped railway stations and new highway stretches, Mr. Modi will inaugurate key projects in Puducherry and Karaikal and launch three new All India Radio FM transmitters in Tamil Nadu, marking a visit that blends development initiatives with a significant religious engagement.
