Rain in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 27 Feb (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across parts of Kerala until Saturday, urging residents to exercise extreme caution as lightning strikes pose significant risks to life and property.

In an advisory issued on Friday, the IMD warned that lightning can be highly dangerous, causing fatalities among humans and animals while also damaging electrical and communication networks. Household appliances connected to electrical circuits are particularly vulnerable during thunderstorms, the department said.

Authorities have advised the public to move indoors immediately at the first sign of lightning or thunder. Remaining in open areas significantly increases the risk of being struck. During periods of strong winds and lightning, residents are advised to close all doors and windows and avoid standing near them. People should stay inside secure buildings and try to minimise direct contact with walls and floors wherever possible.

The IMD also recommended disconnecting electrical appliances to prevent damage caused by sudden power surges. Using wired telephones during lightning should be avoided, though mobile phone usage is considered safe.

Children and adults have been cautioned against playing in open spaces or on terraces when the sky is overcast. Standing under trees during thunderstorms is particularly dangerous, and vehicles should not be parked beneath trees due to the risk of falling branches or lightning strikes.

Those travelling in cars during lightning are advised to remain inside the vehicle with doors and windows closed, keeping hands and limbs away from metal surfaces. However, travel on two-wheelers, bicycles, or tractors should be avoided during thunderstorms. Individuals caught outdoors are urged to seek shelter in a safe building until the storm passes.

Residents are also advised not to go to terraces or courtyards to collect clothes during lightning. Objects that may be blown away by strong winds should be secured in advance.

Bathing or collecting water from taps during lightning is discouraged, as electricity can travel through plumbing systems. Similarly, fishing, swimming, boating, or standing on boat decks must be strictly avoided during thunderstorms. Fisherfolk are advised to return to shore immediately at the sight of dark clouds and suspend activities such as casting nets or angling until conditions improve.

The IMD reiterated that early precaution and awareness remain the best defence against lightning-related accidents.
