Kolkata, 24 February (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly criticized the state government and administration over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya said at a press conference in Kolkata on Tuesday that the SIR process is being deliberately disrupted in West Bengal, while the process has been completed peacefully in other states across the country.
Shamik Bhattacharya stated that in addition to West Bengal, SIR was initiated in 11 other states, of which 10 have already completed the process. He said that SIR was also conducted without any opposition in non-BJP ruled states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, but West Bengal is the only state where allegations of violence, obstruction, intimidation, and administrative bias are emerging.
The BJP leader alleged that an atmosphere of unrest is being deliberately created in the state regarding SIR. He said that the conduct of the SIR under the supervision of judges after the Supreme Court's directive exposes the state administration's incompetence and lack of credibility.
Shamik Bhattacharya alleged that false cases were being filed against BJP workers and Form-7s were being filed in the name of BLA-2s to manipulate the voter list. Clarifying the party's stance, he said, No SIR, no vote.
He stressed that the Election Commission has a constitutional responsibility to prepare an error-free and transparent voter list. Consequently, he demanded that senior Election Commission official Gyanesh Kumar visit West Bengal to directly observe the situation on the ground.
The BJP leader warned that if the SIR process was not completed in a fair and peaceful manner, the party would be forced to launch a mass movement.
