Chennai, 24 February (H.S.) : In a significant recognition of Indian academic excellence, Professor B. Ravindran from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has been appointed to the United Nations’ Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.

This body was established through a UN General Assembly Resolution to provide rigorous and independent scientific assessments regarding the global impact of AI on modern society.

The panel represents the first global scientific body dedicated to AI, bringing together leading experts from diverse disciplines to evaluate how this technology is transforming lives across the world.

The formation of this panel follows the Global Digital Compact adopted during the 2024 Summit of the Future, which envisioned a safe and inclusive digital future guided by scientific evidence.

Professor Ravindran is a veteran in the field with over three decades of experience and currently serves as the Head of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI. He is also the Founding Head of the Centre for Responsible AI at IIT Madras. His research focuses heavily on deep reinforcement learning and the ethical deployment of artificial intelligence.

Expressing his views on the appointment, Professor Ravindran stated that AI is a generational technology that touches everyone's life, often without their direct knowledge.

He remarked that he is deeply honored to represent India and the voice of the Global South on this international stage. The panel aims to strengthen global cooperation and provide evidence-based insights to support international governance efforts.

This appointment highlights the growing influence of IIT Madras in shaping global discourse on emerging technologies and responsible AI research.
