Dhubri (Assam), 24 February (HS): A government primary school teacher in Assam’s Dhubri district has been arrested for allegedly showing objectionable content to minor students inside a classroom, triggering outrage among parents and local residents.

The accused, Abdul Khaleque, an assistant teacher at 989 No. Rashtrabhasha Hindi Primary School in the Balurchar area, was taken into custody by Dhubri Sadar Police on Tuesday following complaints lodged by guardians. The school, established in 1949, is regarded as one of the oldest institutions in the 3 No. Balurchar locality.

The incident reportedly came to light after several students returned home in distress and informed their parents about the alleged act. According to complaints, the teacher is accused of using his mobile phone during school hours to display explicit and inappropriate images to minor students inside the classroom.

Concerned parents approached Ward Commissioner Joydeb Krishna Paul, seeking immediate intervention to ensure the safety of their children. On Tuesday morning, the ward commissioner visited the school and apprised Headteacher Rakesh Roy of the allegations.

As news of the incident spread, a large number of guardians gathered on the school premises, leading to tense scenes and protests demanding strict action. In view of the mounting public anger, school authorities and the ward commissioner called the police. A team from Dhubri Sadar Police Station reached the spot and detained the accused.

Abdul Khaleque was escorted from the campus amid slogans demanding exemplary punishment. Several parents termed the alleged act a serious breach of trust, stating that a teacher is expected to serve as a guardian and role model for students.

Police have registered a case and are interrogating the accused at Dhubri Sadar Police Station. Ward Commissioner Joydeb Krishna Paul has urged a thorough probe, including a forensic examination of the teacher’s mobile phone to verify the allegations.

Headteacher Rakesh Roy has assured guardians that a formal report will be sent to the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), seeking appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with service rules.

Local leaders have also called for stricter monitoring of mobile phone usage by teaching and non-teaching staff during school hours to safeguard the well-being and security of minor students.--------
