
New Delhi, 23 February (HS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and several senior leaders expressed grief over the demise of senior West Bengal leader and former Union Minister Mukul Roy.
In a post on X, Amit Shah said he was saddened by Roy’s passing and noted that his long public life was marked by organisational skills and an understanding of public issues. He extended condolences to Roy’s family members and supporters.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described the news as deeply saddening and said Roy had remained active in public life for a long time, contributing significantly to political discourse. He conveyed sympathies to the bereaved family and supporters.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed grief, describing Roy as a long-time political associate who had been involved in various movements.
She said he had played an important role since the formation of the Trinamool Congress and had served as a Union Minister. She noted that his organisational understanding and contribution to state politics would be remembered.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge extended condolences to Roy’s family and supporters, stating that after beginning his political journey with the Indian Youth Congress, Roy had worked for the people of West Bengal and earned respect across party lines for his organisational abilities.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Roy’s demise was a significant loss to Indian politics and recalled his contributions as an experienced public figure.
Mukul Roy passed away following a heart attack. The 71-year-old leader had been admitted to a hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where he breathed his last in the early hours of the morning.
