Indian Embassy in Mexico issues advisory after cartel violence

Delhi/Mexico City, 23 February (HS): The Embassy of India in Mexico has advised Indian nationals to remain vigilant and shelter in place following widespread violence triggered by the killing of Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes during a military operation in Jalisco.

The advisory came after retaliatory incidents were reported across western and central Mexico. Gunmen set vehicles on fire, blocked highways and clashed with security forces in Jalisco and neighbouring states, including Michoacan and Guanajuato.

In a post on X, the embassy stated that security operations, road blockages and related criminal activity were ongoing. It specifically cautioned Indian nationals in Jalisco State — including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara — as well as in Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon to remain indoors until further notice.

The embassy urged citizens to avoid areas around law enforcement activity, minimise unnecessary travel and stay alert to their surroundings. It advised monitoring local media for updates and following instructions issued by local authorities, including contacting emergency services at 911 if required.

Indian nationals were also advised to avoid large gatherings, keep family and friends informed of their safety and location, and remain in secure premises during the period of unrest.

For assistance, the embassy said Indian nationals may contact the Embassy of India in Mexico at +52 55 4847 7539.
