Rain in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 22 Feb (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall across Kerala on Sunday, issuing a yellow alert for three districts — Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki.

According to the IMD, these districts are likely to receive heavy spells of rain, while gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph may also occur in parts of the state. Residents in vulnerable areas, particularly in high ranges and low-lying regions, have been advised to remain cautious.

The fresh spell of unsettled weather is attributed to the formation of a new low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. Meteorologists said the system is expected to move west-northwestwards and may intensify further over the coming days.

In addition, a cyclonic circulation that was earlier positioned over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal has merged with the newly formed low-pressure system. This consolidation is likely to enhance moisture inflow towards the southern peninsula, contributing to increased rainfall activity over Kerala.

The weather department has indicated that isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue across parts of the state until February 25. While widespread extreme rainfall is not currently predicted, localized intense showers could lead to waterlogging in urban centres and minor landslides in hilly terrain.

Fishermen have been advised to monitor official updates before venturing into the sea, given the possibility of strengthening winds and rough conditions in adjoining waters.

Authorities are keeping a close watch on the evolving system and have urged the public to follow advisories issued by district administrations and disaster management agencies.
