Thiruvananthapuram, 22 Feb (H.S.): In a significant political development ahead of the Assembly elections, the United Democratic Front (UDF) is reportedly exploring a strategy to defeat Kerala minister Roshy Augustine in the Idukki constituency by persuading senior Kerala Congress leader P.J. Joseph to contest against him.

According to sources, the Congress leadership has informally approached P.J. Joseph, chairman of the Kerala Congress, requesting him to consider entering the fray in Idukki as part of a broader tactical move to counter Roshy Augustine, a prominent leader of the Kerala Congress (M). The proposal is being viewed within Congress circles as a calculated attempt to neutralise Augustine’s long-standing dominance in the hill constituency.

Reports had earlier suggested that a section of Kerala Congress (M) leaders was exploring the possibility of returning to the UDF fold. However, Roshy Augustine’s firm opposition to any such shift is believed to have stalled those efforts. Congress leaders now appear keen to challenge him directly in Idukki, which they consider a crucial seat in their broader electoral arithmetic.

However, indications suggest that P.J. Joseph has declined the Congress leadership’s suggestion. Sources say he has conveyed that if he chooses to contest the upcoming election, it would only be from his traditional stronghold of Thodupuzha, not Idukki. The discussions reportedly took place at a time when bilateral talks between Congress and Kerala Congress had not made substantial progress.

Congress is said to be exerting pressure on Kerala Congress leaders to field winnable candidates in key constituencies such as Idukki, Kothamangalam and Irinjalakuda. While Congress publicly claims it can cross the 100-seat mark to form the next government, there is internal concern that a triangular contest in several constituencies could intensify competition and affect outcomes.

During the first round of talks, Congress communicated its position regarding candidates in these constituencies. Although Congress had expressed interest in taking over the Kuttanad seat or fielding a candidate of its choice there, the Kerala Congress leadership reportedly rejected the demand.

Roshy Augustine has represented Idukki since 2001 and secured victory in the 2021 Assembly election with a margin of 5,573 votes. Congress leaders believe that defeating him would send a strong political message and alter the electoral dynamics in the high-range district.
