Thiruvananthapuram,21 Feb (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across parts of Kerala on Saturday and Sunday, prompting the issuance of yellow alerts in several districts. The warning comes amid the likelihood of intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next two days.
According to the IMD, a yellow alert has been declared on Saturday for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts, where isolated heavy rainfall is expected. On Sunday, the alert will remain in force for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts.
The weather department defines “heavy rainfall” as precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Officials have cautioned that localized heavy downpours could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions, particularly in hilly and high-range regions.
In addition to heavy rain, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely over the two-day period. The IMD has also warned of strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph over interior areas. Residents have been advised to exercise caution, especially during lightning activity, and to avoid sheltering under trees or near unstable structures.
A separate advisory has been issued for coastal areas. The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts on both days due to the possibility of rough sea conditions. Wind speeds along the coast are expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph and may occasionally reach up to 60 kmph. Squally weather conditions are likely, making sea travel hazardous.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and district administrations have been asked to remain vigilant. Disaster management teams have been alerted to respond swiftly in case of emergencies.
The IMD has urged the public to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities as the state braces for another spell of monsoon rain.
