Hooghly, 21 February (H.S.):

Several BJP and CPI(M) leaders and supporters joined the Trinamool Congress following a block-level protest rally held in Goghat in Hooghly district of West Bengal on Saturday against the demolition of a temple in the Pursura assembly constituency.

The joining ceremony took place in the presence of Goghat-1 Panchayat Samiti Block Chief Kajal Roy and Panchayat Samiti Member Vijay Roy (PSS).

Haru Pandit, Vice President of the BJP's Goghat Mandal-2, from Raghubati Gram Panchayat area of Goghat Block-1, and several families from the Saora Gram Panchayat, including Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders Sheikh Moni, Sheikh Babulal, and Jayjit Molla from the Bali area, joined the Trinamool Congress.

According to local sources, a total of 30 families left the BJP and the CPI(M) to join the Trinamool Congress. On this occasion, the newly inducted members said that they had joined the Trinamool Congress after being impressed by the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the policies of the state government.

The Trinamool Congress leadership claimed that the party's support base in Goghat and surrounding areas is continuously strengthening and that in the coming days, more leaders and supporters from other parties may join the Trinamool Congress.
