Bhubaneswar, 21 February (H.S.): The Odisha government has announced a significant change in liquor packaging, with Tetra Pak cartons set to replace traditional glass bottles across the state. The decision was disclosed by Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, who described the move as a step towards environmentally sustainable practices.
Under the new arrangement, liquor in Odisha will be sold in Tetra Pak packaging, similar to the cartons used for soft drinks and fruit beverages. The government plans a phased rollout, gradually replacing glass bottles at retail outlets statewide.
Minister Harichandan highlighted that the transition aims to promote environmental protection by minimizing the hazards associated with glass waste. Tetra packs are lighter, less prone to breakage, and easier to transport and store, offering a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional glass bottles.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the state excise system and adopt safer, sustainable packaging solutions. The government expects that moving to Tetra Pak cartons will not only reduce the environmental impact of liquor packaging but also enhance overall waste management in Odisha.
