Kolkata, 21 February (H.S.): West Bengal is currently witnessing contrasting weather conditions, with cool mornings and unusually warm nights affecting daily life across the state. While morning temperatures have dipped below 20 degrees Celsius, nighttime temperatures have risen above 30 degrees Celsius in several parts. The Meteorological Department has indicated that temperatures are likely to climb further from March onward.

Under the influence of a low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal, light rainfall is expected on February 23 and 24 (Monday and Tuesday) in parts of East Midnapore district along the Odisha border and in some areas of Jhargram. Rainfall activity is expected to be relatively higher in Odisha and adjoining coastal districts. Several districts of south Bengal may also experience partly cloudy skies over the next few days.

According to the forecast, temperatures across south Bengal districts may rise by around three degrees Celsius over the next two to three days. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to increase. In Kolkata, the minimum temperature on Sunday is likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature could reach 33 to 34 degrees Celsius by Wednesday. As a result, this year’s Holi festival is likely to be celebrated amid warm weather conditions.

On Saturday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 19.5 degrees Celsius. On Friday, the maximum temperature stood at 31.6 degrees Celsius, which was 1.1 degrees above normal. Relative humidity levels on Saturday ranged between 82 percent (maximum) and 40 percent (minimum).

All districts of north Bengal are likely to experience light to moderate fog in the coming days. The Meteorological Department stated that the gradual rise in temperature is expected to continue across the state.
